Asthma Friendly Sports Club Programme: so asthma doesn’t stop ANYONE
22 March 2018

The aim of the Asthma Friendly Sports Club Programme (AFSC) is to provide clubs with FREE asthma education so that having asthma doesn’t stop anyone from participating in sport or physical activity.

Over the last year, Breathe Hawke’s Bay has dedicated time to developing and delivering this new programme thanks to the financial funding from Pub Charity. In 2017, 20 sports coaches attended a FREE 20 minute presentation and two more this year so far. We know the benefits that regular exercise can have on respiratory health management, which is why it is so important for conditions like asthma to be seen as a reason to keep active, rather than preventing people from getting involved.

Our registered nurses can come to your sports club at a time that suits you. The programme has been designed to give managers, coaches and club members the tools to recognise asthma symptoms and if need be, manage an asthma emergency.

As an Asthma Friendly Sports Club each coach or manager who attends a session receives a resource pack including a booklet containing information matching the education session, a spacer* and first aid magnet.

Some of the feedback we have received:

the presentation was enlightening/refreshing and to the point”

“it was a valuable update”

“very good, worthwhile presentation and resource pack”
